Comic book fans are getting more and more excited for the upcoming movie crop of 2012. There are a number of blockbuster upcoming comic book movies ready for release, and comic book news sites have reviewing and analyzing trailer after trailer in an effort to satiate their curiosity.

Without a doubt, one of the biggest titles to look forward to in 2012 is going to be Christopher Nolan’s final film of his Batman trilogy: The Dark Knight Rises. Featuring two of Batman’s most iconic villains, the film will feature Catwoman and Bane as the principle antagonists. Given Nolan’s disturbing view into the mind of the Joker in The Dark Knight and his excellent recreation of Scarecrow and Ra’s al Ghul in Batman Begins, one can only imagine what he’s planning on doing with his latest renditions of Gotham’s most wanted. Also hinted at is the possible return of Ra’s al Ghul, though actor Liam Neeson has thus far remained tight-lipped about the possibility. What’s more, the trailers are not shy about reminding us that this is Nolan’s last Batman film; a fact that will no doubt mean more sales at the box office. Sure to be a fan favorite, The Dark Knight Rises is setting its self up for record-breaking sales come next July.

No less anticipated is Marvel’s upcoming slugfest with Loki in The Avengers. This is a film that has been hinted at since 2008 with Nick Fury’s cameo in Iron Man. Since then, he’s lingered at the back of a number of other Marvel films, tantalizing viewers with the promise of a future film. With Captain America the build-up is finally over and the stage is set for The Avengers. The latest trailer promises not only some truly epic villain fighting, but also a bit of hero vs. hero action as well. Captain America especially seems like he’ll be clashing with several members of the team, and of course the Incredible Hulk will no doubt be a source of conflict as well. All in all, the film promises to be a gratuitous mash-up of action, drama and explosions galore set to be released in early May of next summer.

Also exciting is the buzz about the newest edition to the Spiderman franchise, The Amazing Spiderman. A promising looking reboot of the series, The Amazing Spiderman is going to go back and retell the story of Peter Parker’s origin and how he came to possess the abilities of a spider. While the trailer is somewhat reticent in telling us who Peter will be squaring off against, the buzz about the internet says that the villain this time around will be the Lizard, which is exciting news for fans of the series. Other tantalizing clues in the trailer hint at some backstory on Spiderman’s parents, something conspicuously absent from the previous films. Parker is played by Andrew Garfield, a refreshing new face for the role, and is complemented by Emma Stone filling the role of Gwen Stacy. Slated for release early next September, this film will miss the summer movie rush, but promises to be an excellent cap on the season.
